In Memoriam

David S. Conant (1949 – 2018)

The New England Botanical Club is sad to learn of the sudden passing of David S. Conant, who was NEBC President from 1998 to 2000, Vice-President 1996-1998, and a member for 47 years (since 1971). He was an instrumental organizer of a symposium for the centennial of Rhodora held in April 1999 and briefly its Editor-in-Chief in 1996. Dr. Conant retired from Lyndon State College, Vermont, in 2009, as described in this article. A long obituary describes David’s life and his joking nature, as illustrated in this picture from the Rhodora symposium. David Conant’s remembrances of his professor, Albion Reed Hodgdon, at the University of New Hampshire, also describes how his lifelong interest in ferns began in Puerto Rico.
